Nurses In Hospital Returns
The Continental Army produced hundreds of ‘Hospital Returns’ to keep track of the numbers of sick and wounded soldiers across the different army hospitals. They also kept thorough lists of physicians, surgeons, surgeons’ mates and apothecaries working in the hospitals. Very few of these staff lists include nurses; in fact, only a handful of documents recording nurses’ names have survived. This collection highlights the most detailed of these.
