Dante Translating
Robin Kirkpatrick, University of Cambridge
This essay is intended as a discussion document. Its argument is thattranslation does not involve a search for conclusive authority but israther a performative act, engaging the reader of a translation as well asits author in close critical engagement with the text. This may be saideven in considering the translation of Dante’s Commedia—a work which alltoo often is thought to aim at final, definitive utterance.
