Bibliotheca Dantesca, Vol. 4

Volume 4 of Bibliotheca Dantesca brings together a wide-ranging set of essays that reflect the breadth and vitality of contemporary Dante studies, moving across periods, genres, methodologies, and media. The contributions range from foundational questions of interpretation and theology to close readings of specific episodes and figures in the Commedia, including renewed examinations of Geryon, Francesca, and the manuscript tradition. Other articles explore Dante’s engagement with philosophy and gender in the Convivio, the dynamics of exile and testimony in modern criticism, and the intricate afterlives of Dantean language and imagery in writers from Alessandro Manzoni to Alfonso Varano. The volume also extends outward into unexpected cultural terrains, considering Dante’s presence in graphic narrative and in contemporary political imagery, thereby demonstrating the poet’s continued resonance in both global and public spheres. Complementing the scholarly articles, two reports broaden the issue’s scope: one offers a critical reflection on Dantean iconography in the wake of the 2021 Capitol riot, while the other surveys the worldwide initiatives commemorating the seven-hundredth anniversary of Dante’s death, documenting the poet’s enduring institutional and popular appeal. These varied contributions present a multifaceted panorama of Dante’s textual, historical, and cultural afterlives, attesting to the field’s methodological diversity and ongoing dynamism.
