Textus triu[m] libroru[m] De anima Aristotelis cu[m] co[m]mentario secu[n]dum doctrina[m] venerabilis domini Alberti Magni (Cologne: Johann Koelhoff the Elder, 1491)

Penn Libraries, Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts, Folio Inc A-970

This incunable, containing Aristotle’s De anima (or On the Soul) together with the commentary of Albert the Great, has an interesting woodcut on the title page. The woodcut represents Albert while delivering a lecture in front of a group of students. Among the students, there is Albert’s most famous pupil, Thomas Aquinas, who already has a halo and seems to have a privileged relationship with his teacher. Manuscript captions identify both Albert and Thomas. As in other examples, the cartouche above the scene is left blank.
