Johannes Senftleben, Philosophia aristotelica commentarijs doctorum Societatis Jesu illustrata, selectis thesibus proposita, expositáque ... (Prague: Typis Universitatis Carolo-Ferdinandeae in Coll. Soc. Jesu ad S. Clementem, anno MDCCII [1702])

Penn Libraries, Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts, GrC Ar466 T1 1702b

These commentaries on Aristotle’s works, in three small tomes, were assembled by the Jesuit professor of Philosophy Johannes Senftleben (1648-1693), who taught in Prague during the second half of the seventeenth century. Charles University (Univerzita Karlova) in Prague previously owned this exemplar. The engraving on display depicts Aristotle working at his desk, illuminated by the light of faith, represented by the monogram IHS (Iesus), the emblem of the Jesuit order, carried by two angels. The engraving is basically a “translation” of the work’s title, according to which Aristotle’s philosophy was to be “illuminated” (illustrata) by the commentaries collected by the Jesuit Senftleben.
