This painting shows a woman relaxing in the privacy of her house. In many joint households, from the perspective of partners and in-laws, such behavior is sanctioned as ‘lazy’ and frowned upon. Contributing to the core themes of Modern Dharma: Seeking Family Well-Being in Middle-Class Nepal, this work shows the contradictions and conflicts that emerge when people want to enjoy freedoms that clash with domestic duties and expectations.
