Notes on how to use this site

This website is meant to serve as a resource for scholars, instructors, and students who are interested in health & medicine, caregiving, and nursing in early American history. The resources included here are organized into smaller collections based on themes identified by the editors. That being said, there are multiple ways to interact with the resources on this website.

You may navigate the site in a linear fashion—clicking through the sections and resources available under “Colonial America,” the “Revolutionary War,” or the “Post-Revolution” periods, and reading the introductory text provided. We hope this will offer important context for understanding the materials displayed in each collection.

You may also choose to navigate to the resource collections directly by using the “Digital Collections” button.

There are also additional citations and resources listed, with links included when possible, under “Bibliography & Other Resources.”

When interacting with the resources, if you click “view resource” under the image you wish to see, it will open a page that contains additional information—including transcriptions and, in some cases, additional copyright information. From the “view resource” page, you can also zoom in to look at an image more closely.

None of the resources on this website are available for download or re-use. If you wish to use any of these materials in a publication, you must contact the repository listed in the citation information.
